Description of Agency/Organization:
The City of Chelsea is an ethnically diverse community of approximately 40,000 residents situated on a
1.8 square miles of land. With an emphasis on economic development and capital improvement, the City
has seen an increase in redevelopment plans and proposals.
The Department of Planning & Development (the Department) is the City’s planning agency and consists
of nine full time staff working in the areas of housing, transportation, economic development,
environment, land use planning, and planning administration. The Department serves as staff to the
Affordable Housing Trust Fund Committee, Community Preservation Commission, Conservation
Commission, Economic Development Board, Historic Commission, Planning Board, and Zoning Board of
Appeals, and serves on the Traffic and Parking Commission.

Description of Internship Position:
The Department is seeking to fill its Planning Intern position. The intern may work on various projects,
including, but not limited to, assisting Department staff in developing data on the City’s housing stock
and on private investment in the housing stock in targeted neighborhoods; developing data for the City’s
waterfront, economic development and downtown initiatives; working on maximizing local participation
in the 2020 Census; and assisting staff with boards and commissions. The Intern will interact with
Department staff as well as with other City Departments, State agencies, local nonprofits, and the general
public.

Required Skills/Experience:
Experience with GIS is a requirement.
Knowledge of basic planning practice and standards is helpful.
Basic familiarity with state laws relating to planning, zoning, and housing is helpful.
Basic research methods, including internet research, and strong written and oral communication skills.

 

Schedule/Hours per week: Up to 19 hours/week, through the end of May
Compensation: $15/hr
