Biography

The “First 1,000 Days” —conception to age 2 years— is an important period for the prevention of obesity in mother-child pairs and their families. The First 1,000 Days program aims to prevent the development of obesity among mother-infant pairs at MGH’s Revere and Chelsea HealthCare Centers and DotHouse Health, where rates of maternal-child obesity are higher than local and national averages.The program engages providers from primary care (obstetrics, pediatrics, adult medicine), mental health, and community health services, such as the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC), home visiting and fatherhood programs. Mother-child pairs are followed from the mother’s first prenatal visit until the child’s second birthday. Program components include: enhanced electronic health records to improve the quality of preventive services and screening for social determinants of health; consistent behavior change messaging across sectors and providers; patient education via print, text messaging and short videos; strengthening of integration of clinical and public health services to support behavior change and address social determinants of health; and individualized health coaching for mother-infant pairs at high risk of obesity.

If pregnant or you have a child under 5, healthy foods, referrals to programs and more are available. Insurance is not required.

The Women, Infants and Children (WIC) program provides nutrition and breastfeeding counseling, healthy food benefits on an electronic card and other local resources to income eligible prenatal/post-partum women, infants and children up to age five. Offer free breastfeeding education classes facilitated by a certified lactation counselor. Fathers, guardians and foster parents are also welcome to apply for WIC services for children in their care. The Program helps measure the growth of your baby and children to helps them stay healthy.

Ages 6-12 years. Children’s After School is a closed referral program, and accepts referrals through DMH and DCF only. CASP is a voluntary, community based, therapeutic program for children ages 6 to 12 with emotional, behavioral, and mental health needs. The program utilizes a structured program and behavior management system. At CASP, children participate in therapeutic groups which focus on developing social skills and adaptive coping skills. A primary goal of the program is to support and maintain children with their families in their home communities. To do this, each child is assigned a Child and Family Advocate to provide case management services and coordinate care between the program, family, and other providers. The program operates Monday through Friday from 2:00pm until 4:45pm during the school year. CASP is also open during school vacation weeks and the summer. During those times, it is in operation Monday through Friday from 10:00am until 2:00pm.

North Suffolk’s Harbor Area Early Intervention (EI) program services the communities of East Boston, Chelsea, Revere, Winthrop and the Boston neighborhood of Charlestown.  Harbor Area Early Childhood Services offers developmental therapies to children aged birth to three years in the context of family education, training and support. The program philosophy holds that parents are experts and primary teachers of their children.  Early Intervention services are provided to infants and toddlers presenting with developmental delay or who have risk of delay due to environmental, medical and/or biological factors. Home-based services as part of an Individualized Family Service Plan and playgroups for community children are available.
