Description of Agency/Organization:
The City of Chelsea is an ethnically diverse community of approximately 40,000 residents situated on a
1.8 square miles of land. With an emphasis on economic development and capital improvement, the City
has seen an increase in redevelopment plans and proposals.
The Department of Planning & Development (the Department) is the City’s planning agency and consists
of nine full time staff working in the areas of housing, transportation, economic development,
environment, land use planning, and planning administration. The Department serves as staff to the
Affordable Housing Trust Fund Committee, Community Preservation Commission, Conservation
Commission, Economic Development Board, Historic Commission, Planning Board, and Zoning Board of
Appeals, and serves on the Traffic and Parking Commission.

Description of Internship Position:
The Department is seeking to fill its Planning Intern position. The intern may work on various projects,
including, but not limited to, assisting Department staff in developing data on the City’s housing stock
and on private investment in the housing stock in targeted neighborhoods; developing data for the City’s
waterfront, economic development and downtown initiatives; working on maximizing local participation
in the 2020 Census; and assisting staff with boards and commissions. The Intern will interact with
Department staff as well as with other City Departments, State agencies, local nonprofits, and the general
public.

Required Skills/Experience:
Experience with GIS is a requirement.
Knowledge of basic planning practice and standards is helpful.
Basic familiarity with state laws relating to planning, zoning, and housing is helpful.
Basic research methods, including internet research, and strong written and oral communication skills.

 

Schedule/Hours per week: Up to 19 hours/week, through the end of May
Compensation: $15/hr

HarborCOV has new exciting positions available

Immigration Advocate: Full Time
This non-attorney position provides high-quality immigration-related legal advocacy supports to
victims and survivors of domestic violence and case management staff, and supports the
organization’s collaborative work with law enforcement, the courts and attorneys. Bilingual
written and verbal proficiency required and above average knowledge of immigration-related
issues for survivors of domestic violence, including VAWA petitions, U and T visas, and the
associated tools and resources available. Must have a passionate interest in the legal rights of
immigrant survivors of abuse; a commitment to be trained as a Department of Justice accredited
representative for clients; the ability to troubleshoot, assess, monitor and maintain a caseload,
and develop and maintain strategic community collaborations; strong written and verbal
communication skills; and exemplary attention to detail.

 

Domestic Violence Program Manager: Full Time
This position provides support and leadership for case managers to ensure high-quality, intensive
engagement with survivors in our low-income multicultural communities. Responsibilities
include coordinating consistent intake, high-risk assessment and case management processes
through survivor-centered, trauma-informed approaches; supervising and supporting a strong
team of case managers that fosters ongoing learning and professional development; ensuring
accurate case management data collection, communication and collaboration to ensure safety,
confidentiality and access to quality resources for survivors; meaningful coordination and
collaboration with other direct service team members to support survivors’ progress toward their
goals; and coordinating engagement activities and events for survivors. Keen assessment and
communication skills, five years’ experience in the domestic violence field, three years direct
supervision experience and computer literacy required. Bilingual fluency (Arabic or Portuguese)
preferred.

Database and Program Evaluation Director: Full Time
The Database and Program Evaluation Director serves as the site administrator for the
organization’s Efforts to Outcomes (ETO) software, providing leadership and oversight of data
collection, analysis and reporting. This position will maintain program data quality; measure
client outcomes; analyze statistical trends internally and externally; evaluate existing and
potential programs; provide ongoing support and training to the direct service team on accurate
and quality data collection; and work in coordination with the direct service team for funder
reports and, when relevant, on print materials and internal statistic snapshots. The Database and
Program Evaluation Director will have two to three years of experience with ETO reporting and
administration at a nonprofit, be highly organized and detail-oriented with above-average
computer and writing skills. Work experience at a domestic violence program highly preferred.
They will need to understand high-performance outcome-driven work and be self-motivated
while thriving in a team-oriented environment working toward micro and macro goals.

 

Ideal candidates will be able to balance their love of being part of a mission-centered team with
working independently, have exceptional assessment, listening, communication, problem-solving
and de-escalation skills as well as supportive and anti-oppressive supervision skills; be highly

creative, flexible and adaptive; and have a deep understanding of culturally grounded, strength-
based strategies within an economic and social-justice framework for working with survivors,

the broader community and other members of the HarborCOV team.

the causes and consequences of domestic violence.

Taylor Mac’s sly, subversive comedy begins with prodigal son Isaac returning from the war, only to find a house in revolt. Liberated from an abusive marriage, his mom Paige is on a crusade to dismantle the patriarchy. His sister Maxine is no longer his sister but his transgender/genderqueer sibling Max who uses the pronouns ze and hir. His once violent father is being fed estrogen and dressed as a clown. But in this anarchic reimagining of the classic American kitchen sink drama, annihilating the past doesn’t always free you from it.

About the show: One morning in 1780, a woman named Peggy Shippen seemed to go stark raving mad. Her husband, Benedict Arnold, had been accused of treason — and so Peggy came down to breakfast, scantily clad and tormented by hallucinations. That morning came to be known as the Mad Scene. Using minimal technical elements and a cast of four, Peggy & the Mad Scenes examines this pivotal moment in American history and the effect one woman had on some of the nation’s most legendary figures. Presented as part of the Resident Artist Program at Chelsea Theatre Works.

Power of Parenting in Chelsea

Families First Sees Overwhelming Success in Chelsea

Many Communities Outside of Boston are Eager to Run the Power of Parenting Program

 

We are excited to share the launch of our first Power of Parenting program outside of Boston. Beginning in August 2019, we expanded our program to the City of Chelsea. Not only did we take an important step into a new community, but it was one of our most successful Power of Parenting programs, graduating 19 out of 20 parents.
This program made Families First history. Beyond reporting the highest graduation rate that we’ve seen in the Power of Parenting program to date, five parents had perfect attendance and 100% of parents reported that they are highly likely to recommend the program. “I think the comfort level of the language capacity was huge,” said our program partner. “It was a major barrier breakdown for community members.”

It is evident that programs like this are both appreciated and needed in the area. Next year, Families First plans to expand the number of programs offered in the City of Chelsea, engaging even more parents and benefiting even more children during the important early years of life.
