About this training: The Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office and Children’s Advocacy Center aim to empower people of all ages to stay safe while using technology. By helping youth understand the risks that go along with social media, gaming, and just being online, we can reduce harm and prevent exploitation, cyberbullying, and more. This education program uses a simple message that we encourage adults to remember and teach to youth: Stop, Block, and Talk.While caregivers and professionals can’t always prevent youth from having upsetting and even risky online encounters, they can always make sure that young people know they can talk to adults about things that make them feel uncomfortable and teach them how to respond when such an incident occurs. In this workshop, we will:
-
Explore the risks and rewards of popular social media apps, websites, and games used by youth today;
-
Share strategies for increasing youth safety online, including applying recommended privacy settings; and
-
Discuss the best approaches to talking with youth about online safety.
