Boston University/Chelsea Public Schools – Intergenerational Literacy Project at the Early Learning Center
Biography
Supporting families in working with their children, both to attain the instructional objectives of the schools and to reinforce positive attitudes toward education. To accomplish the larger goal, two sub-goals and objectives have been outlined: to improve the literacy skills of participating adults and to improve literacy knowledge among preschool and school-aged children. The core programming is ESOL family literacy. The program offers 4 ESOL family literacy classes. It also offers children’s educational classes to 80 children so that parents are able to attend class. In the morning and evening, they serve children ages 6 months to 5 years. In the evening and during school vacations, they also offer classes for school-aged children.

The Talent Search program identifies and assists individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds who have the potential to succeed in higher education. The program provides academic, career, and financial counseling to its participants and encourages them to graduate from high school and continue on to and complete their postsecondary education. The program publicizes the availability of financial aid and assist participant with the postsecondary application process. Talent Search also encourages persons who have not completed education programs at the secondary or postsecondary level to enter or reenter and complete postsecondary education. The goal of Talent Search is to increase the number of youth from disadvantaged backgrounds who complete high school and enroll in and complete their postsecondary education.

Centerboard – Teen Living Program
Biography
Centerboard’s Teen Living Program in Chelsea is a program of Department of Transitional Assistance (DTA) that offers housing for eligible teens, ages 12-20 who are pregnant, on maternity leave or working or studying 20 hours per week and have young children. Within the Teen Living Program residents receive services as needed for mental health, employment, medical needs, and parenting skills. Round-the-clock staffing is provided, and there are 8 longer-term beds and 2 emergency beds available. Teens pay 30% of program fees with their DTA cash benefits.

The Veterans’ Services Division provides assistance in obtaining benefits from federal, state, and local programs for veterans and their dependents, as well as aids them by providing financial assistance for ordinary living expenses and medical needs. The Division also helps veterans with counseling, medical, employment and other services. Additionally, the Veterans Administrator works closely with the Soldier’s Home to provide housing for Veterans in need of shelter.
