Chelsea Collaborative – Chelsea Summer Youth Employment Initiative
Biography
The Chelsea Summer Youth Employment Initiative was created to reduce and ultimately eliminate youth violence. On the morning of September 11, 2001, Latino leaders were meeting at Chelsea City Hall organized by the Collaborative’s Latino Coalition to address concerns with an increase in youth and gang violence. That summer a young person lost his life due to gang violence. Latino and other leaders saw that life as one too many lost to street violence. That morning, symbolic for many reasons, will stand for the Collaborative as the birth of the extremely popular and successful Summer Youth Employment Initiative (SYEI). Years later, the SYEI has hired hundreds of youth and kept them off the streets all while learning valuable employment skills.

The Collaborative opened its doors to the Somali Bantu community and helped them fundraise to hire part-time staff to further their efforts. Soon thereafter SCA formalized. Now, SCA members are getting the services they need, are participating in Leadership Institutes, becoming citizens and partnering with Harvard School of Public Health on a research study. Much work remains to be done, but SCA has accomplished much in a few short years.
