Virtual Public Informational Meeting and Q&A: Draft Clean Water Act Permit for the Massport Logan Airport

On April 12, 2021, U.S. EPA issued a draft NPDES permit under the Clean Water Act (CWA) for the Massachusetts Port Authority’s (Massport) Logan Airport facility located adjacent to Boston Harbor, Boston Inner Harbor and Winthrop Bay in East Boston for a 60-day public comment period. Massport owns and operates Logan Airport which serves the Boston metropolitan area and New England. This permit, last issued in 2007, limits what can legally be discharged to Boston Harbor, Boston Inner Harbor and Winthrop Bay as well as specifying operational measures designed to control pollution from the airport. The limits and controls ensure that the discharges do not hurt water quality or people’s health. Facilities must monitor their discharge on a regular basis, document their control measures, and frequently report those results to EPA. The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection is issuing a similar permit to this facility under the state’s Clean Waters Act.

Your input is needed on the Draft Clean Water Act Permit for the Massport Logan Airport that will impact Boston Harbor, Boston Inner Harbor, and Winthrop Bay in East Boston. This permit limits what Logan Airport can legally discharge into them and ensures the discharges do not hurt water quality or people’s health.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency invites you to comment on the draft permit. Join these two virtual meetings:

Cambridge Savings Charitable Foundation (CSCF) is pleased to support TND in their mission to increase the supply of affordable housing

CSCF will match donations made to TND in support of housing stability, up to a total donation amount of $30,000. For every $100 we raise, we leverage $2,000 in rental assistance for community members.

Richard Flores was first introduced to TND through Chelsea High School’s National Honor Society where he got involved with TND’s neighborhood and community beautification initiatives. Richard saw firsthand the positive impact that neighbors can have on a space when they work together.

“I know a lot of friends whose parents couldn’t afford housing and had to move to areas that were way more affordable. I’ve lost a lot of friendships.”

Richard joined the Housing Equity Committee to talk about difficult and complex issues in his community. The committee focuses on bringing community members in and giving them a space to speak up about their experiences and what they want the community to work on. The group formed last summer with technical support provided by TND’s Community Building team.

You know when you have that friend to lean on when you’re struggling? I feel like that’s what TND and the Housing Equity Committee have fulfilled for me.”

After experiencing housing concerns of his own, Richard decided to get involved with TND’s housing advocacy work: “My mom and I went from jumping from hotel to hotel a couple of months ago, to being able to afford a house in Chelsea. TND really helped a lot.”

Though Richard’s early community memories left him feeling like he had to leave Chelsea, his recent involvement with The Neighborhood Developers and other local organizations has inspired him to build community wherever he can.

Families in Chelsea, Revere, and Everett are facing displacement due to rents that are no longer affordable. Richard is raising his voice in support of equitable housing solutions. Donate in support of keeping families, like Richard’s, in their homes and communities.

CVS offering walk-in COVID-19 vaccine appointments in Massachusetts

 Massachusetts

“No appointment necessary.”

With demand for shots easing, CVS is now opening COVID-19 vaccine appointments to walk-in patients in Massachusetts.

“Patients are now able to walk-in to select CVS Pharmacy locations to receive a COVID-19 appointment, no appointment necessary,” Matt Blanchette, a spokesman for the pharmacy, told Boston.com in an email.

The move comes after President Joe Biden directed all pharmacies in the federal government’s vaccine distribution partnership to begin providing walk-in hours during a speech Tuesday.

CVS says walk-in appointments will be available at its 389 vaccine-carrying locations in Massachusetts — roughly 94 percent of all CVSs in the state — meaning that people will be able to enter the pharmacy without an appointment, fill out the necessary forms, and get a shot within a relatively short period of time.

Blanchette also noted that “same-day scheduling, including appointments as soon as one hour from time of scheduling,” also remains available on the CVS website. Patients can check the pharmacy’s online scheduler throughout the day to see which locations have appointments available. But the pharmacy says locations should have enough doses to accommodate all walk-ins.

“We continue to orchestrate an all-out effort to vaccinate the nation against COVID-19,” CVS Health President and CEO Karen S. Lynch said in a subsequent statement Wednesday morning.

After months of residents scooping up the scarce number of appointments nearly as quickly as available, the state’s vaxfinder.mass.gov website shows tens of thousands of first-dose appointments available through next week at mass vaccination sites, pharmacies, community centers, and other providers.
