The Chelsea Public Library Celebrates Solar Eclipse Viewing Party / La Biblioteca Pública de Chelsea Celebra Fiesta de Eclipse Solar

The Chelsea Public Library Presents – A Solar Eclipse Viewing Party on April 8th from 2pm-4pm on City Hall Lawn!

A total solar eclipse happens when the Moon passes between the Sun and Earth, completely blocking the face of the Sun, causing the sky to darken. While Massachusetts won’t witness a total eclipse, Chelsea area residents are in for a treat as a partial eclipse unfolds in the afternoon sky. We will be experiencing a partial eclipse of about 93% totality (cloud coverage may impact visibility).

In partnership with STAR Net’s SEAL Initiative the library has a limited number of solar eclipse glasses to give out for free.

Chelsea residents with a library card in good standing can obtain one pair of glasses per family, on a first-come, first-serve basis.

It is never safe to look directly at the sun, and an eclipse is no different. The only way you can safely protect your eyes is with certified eclipse viewing glasses from a reliable source. Regular sunglasses, camera lenses, binoculars, or a telescope are NOT safe. Without the correct protective means, the sun can cause severe eye damage. For more information on safe eclipse viewing and alternatives visit the American Astronomical Society site: https://eclipse.aas.org/eye-safety
