Chelsea Memorial Day

Join the City of Chelsea and the Department of Veterans’ Services for two upcoming events in May to remember and honor our veterans:
  • Thursday, May 16 at 5:00pm | 2024 Field of Honor Event (Chelsea Square). Please join us as we place over 2000 flags to honor the men and women who sacrificed their lives for this country.
  • Monday, May 27 at 10:00am | Memorial Day Ceremony (Chelsea City Hall). Please join us in commemorating the sacrifice our military service members have made over the years for our great country. Light breakfast and lunch will be provided.

Call for Auditions: Join Our Outdoor Summer Production!

Apollinaire Theatre Company, in collaboration with Teatro Chelsea, is thrilled to announce open auditions for their upcoming outdoor summer production of Aeschylus’ “The Suppliant Women,” in a version by David Greig. This bilingual production promises to be a poignant exploration of timeless themes, staged against the beautiful backdrop of PORT Park on the Chelsea Waterfront.

 

We are seeking individuals from the community to join us for this exciting project and thought you would be able to help us spread the word. Auditions are open to all community members, regardless of acting experience and/or English/Spanish language proficiency. We welcome individuals of all backgrounds and skill sets who are passionate about theater and eager to contribute their time and effort to this enriching artistic endeavor. 

Since 2003, Apollinaire’s outdoor moving stage has produced timeless plays, ranging from Lorca’s The House of Bernarda Alba to Ionesco’s Rhinoceros to Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet and Hamlet. Performances are free and are intended to uplift the arts and celebrate the Chelsea community.

About the Production:

“The Suppliant Women,” written 2,500 years ago, tells the story of fifty women fleeing forced marriage in North Africa, seeking asylum in Greece. It explores themes of refugees, moral and human rights, civil war, and democracy, resonating profoundly with contemporary issues. Featuring a chorus of local community members, the production aims to blend elements of play, ritual, and theatrical archaeology.

 

Audition Details:

  • Auditions begin on May 9.

  • We are inviting community members to audition for three large choruses:

  • Suppliant Women Chorus: 

    • Women ages 18-30 (or who appear those ages) – 30-50 performers

  • Citizens of Argos Chorus: 

    • All ages and genders – 12-20 performers

  • Egyptians Chorus: 

    • Men ages 18-30 (or who appear those ages) – 6-12 performers

  • No acting experience required.

  • Auditions will be held at Chelsea Theatre Works, 189 Winnisimmet Street in Chelsea, on May 9th, May 11th, and May 13th.

  • Interested individuals should prepare two short excerpts of songs (about a minute each). In-person auditions are preferred, but video auditions are also accepted.

  • There is an honorarium of $300 for chorus members who participate in the full run.

 

Production Schedule:

  • Rehearsals begin in June and are held on weeknights and Sundays at Chelsea Theatre Works. The final schedule will be based on cast availability.

  • Attendance is required on Sunday before opening and every night during tech week (July 28 through August 1). 

  • Performance dates are August 2, 3, 9, 10, 16, 17, 2024.
