While the number of new cases each day remains much lower than before, over the past two weeks we have begun to see a rise in the average number of cases in Chelsea. This increase is not happening in other places.

Although more activities are allowed under the State Re-opening Plan, please continue to take every precaution. Wear a mask anytime you are around other people who are not in your household. Wash your hands frequently or use hand sanitizer and encourage your kids to do the same, especially after visiting places like grocery stores or playgrounds, or traveling on public transportation.

If you need a mask or hand sanitizer, we will be distributing in Bellingham Square, outside of City Hall from 10am – 12pm on Friday, June 19th, or until supplies are gone.

If you become sick and cannot safely isolate in your own home, you may be able to stay at a hotel in Everett until you are better to help keep the rest of your family safe. Call the City of Chelsea 311 line (617-466-4209).

This summer, we’ll enliven Chelsea’s downtown through several public art projects. Emerging or seasoned artist, or if you just enjoy being creative and helping out, you’ve got opportunities for you – including ones you can do completely from home too!

Chalk Art Saturdays For six Saturdays starting June 13, 2020, make chalk art in public spaces near your home. Each weekend we will have a different theme. And we will invite a different artist to create a larger scale, prominent chalk mural somewhere in the city for you to discover. Coordinated by Claudia Paraschiv of Studioful Design.

Copa y Pega Wheatpaste Mural Festival Digital images printed large scale on pieces of paper and pasted onto walls in the downtown will create a series temporary murals. For these designs we’re recruiting individual artists to create their own works. There will also be a community wheatpaste mural that brings together the contributions of lots of people in the city for one giant piece of art.

Division Street Neighborway We’re continuing the improvements started on Division Street last summer. We’ll bring another block of color with painted murals between Fourth Street and Congress Street. Tying together this alley between Bellingham Square and the waterfront will be four creative crosswalks designed by artist Amanda Hill with direction and painting by members of the community.

Nuestra Mesa In Chelsea Square, unique tables and seating designed by local artists will provide a place to sit outside while staying socially distanced. The theme for these pieces revolves around the Dominican tradition of nine days of mourning with designs exploring grieving (crying and reminiscing), silence (thinking and reverence) and release (accepting and separating). Coordinated by Claudia Paraschiv of Studioful Design.

Join us! 

We are seeking local artists to bring their creativity to these projects. Free online workshops and support sessions led by professional public artists Carolyn Lewenberg and Amanda Hill begin at the end of June. All are invited to attend to advance their artmaking skills, make connections, and get support in developing their designs for these projects. The artists selected to execute their designs will receive a stipend.
