The City of Chelsea will launch two new programs in November to help residents comply with the state’s updated solid waste regulations requiring the recycling of mattresses, box springs, and textiles such as clothing, bedding, towels, and footwear. The City will offer free curbside collection of these items so that they can be taken to specialized recyclers.
For mattresses and box springs, residents who receive municipal trash service can call our 311 call center to schedule a pick up for a Monday or Thursday. The City is contracting with Boston Carting and HandUp Us to collection and recycling.
For textiles, the City has signed an agreement with Helpsy, an organization that will pick up and recycle these items free of charge. Residents can call 311 or use the Helpsy website to schedule a curbside pickup for Tuesday of each week.
311 operators will be able to talk to residents about the type and condition of items before scheduling the pickup to ensure that only approved items are put our for collection.
