Relocation of St Rose COVID-19 Testing Site to Save-A-Lot Building effective February 2 / Reubicación del sitio de prueba de COVID-19 de la Iglesia Santa Rosa al edificio Save-A-Lot a partir del 2 de febrero

Beginning tomorrow Wednesday, February 2, COVID-19 testing will move from the St Rose School location to a new site located in the Parking Plaza Shopping Center off of Webster Avenue, specifically in the former Save-A-Lot location (1100 Revere Beach Parkway) next to Home Depot.

COVID-19 testing hours will remain the same, seven days a week from 1:00-5:00 pm. All testing will be free, regardless of insurance or immigration status, and no appointments are required.

The Parking Plaza offers plenty of public parking for people to use. This location is also accessible via public transportation:

  • The 116 and 117 MBTA buses stop on Broadway @ Webster and Broadway @ Stockton. The testing site is a 10-minute walk from each bus stop.

  • The 112 MBTA bus stops at Summit Avenue @ Chelsea Soldier’s Home, which is an 11-minute walk to the testing site

Transformative Health will operate this testing site as part of the state Stop the Spread initiative.

Volunteers Needed!

When it comes to learning a new language, conversation is a key factor to success but one that is the least accessible to new language learners. La Colaborativa’s Cafecito Hours create a risk free, safe space for our ESOL students to practice their English in a real-world setting.
“I have noticed that Cafecito Hours have changed the attitude and motivation of English learners.” says Hortencia Sanchez, ESOL & Workforce Development Coordinator. “They are more comfortable making mistakes in a setting where students like them are also learning English. The whole purpose of Cafecito is to motivate people to speak and make mistakes in order to gradually improve their English.”
If you’re interested in volunteering as a conversation partner, please email hortencias@la-colaborativa.org. No Spanish language knowledge required!

Carmen is a strong, local leader and Chelsea resident. When Carmen is not activating new immigrant activists in her community, she is dancing mariachi for Grupo Torogoz (the “torogoz” is the national bird of both El Salvador and Nicaragua).

Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP) Rules Released

The FCC released a Report and Order and Further Notice of Proposed Rulemaking that establishes rules for the Affordable Connectivity Program.  Created by the Infrastructure Jobs and Investment Act, the program provides $14.2B toward the reduction of monthly broadband costs for qualifying households.  The ACP will provide qualifying households a discount of up to $30 from a participating provider’s bill. Some participating providers are offering an additional benefit of up to a $100 discount off the purchase of computers or tablets if the consumer pays more than $10 but less than $50 towards the purchase of the device.

Households qualify for the ACP through participation in a number of public benefit programs or having a household income of up to 200% below the Federal poverty guidelines.

The ACP replaced the temporary Emergency Broadband Benefit (EBB) Program, on December 31, 2021.

“The past two years have made totally clear that broadband is no longer a luxury, it’s a necessity. The response to the Emergency Broadband Benefit Program, with over nine million households enrolled in less than eight months, proved what many of us knew to be true: there are simply too many people across the country struggling to pay for high-speed internet service,” said Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel.

The Further Notice of Proposed Rulemaking seeks comment on a pilot program to ensure that households that rely on Federal Public Housing Assistance receive direct outreach about the ACP.  It also seeks comment on establishing a new grant program for ACP outreach partners.
