This summer, we’ll enliven Chelsea’s downtown through several public art projects. Emerging or seasoned artist, or if you just enjoy being creative and helping out, you’ve got opportunities for you – including ones you can do completely from home too!

Chalk Art Saturdays
For six Saturdays starting June 13, 2020, make chalk art in public spaces near your home. Each weekend we will have a different theme. And we will invite a different artist to create a larger scale, prominent chalk mural somewhere in the city for you to discover. Coordinated by Claudia Paraschiv of Studioful Design.

Copa y Pega Wheatpaste Mural Festival
Digital images printed large scale on pieces of paper and pasted onto walls in the downtown will create a series temporary murals. For these designs we’re recruiting individual artists to create their own works. There will also be a community wheatpaste mural that brings together the contributions of lots of people in the city for one giant piece of art.

Division Street Neighborway
We’re continuing the improvements started on Division Street last summer. We’ll bring another block of color with painted murals between Fourth Street and Congress Street. Tying together this alley between Bellingham Square and the waterfront will be four creative crosswalks designed by artist Amanda Hill with direction and painting by members of the community.

Nuestra Mesa
In Chelsea Square, unique tables and seating designed by local artists will provide a place to sit outside while staying socially distanced. The theme for these pieces revolves around the Dominican tradition of nine days of mourning with designs exploring grieving (crying and reminiscing), silence (thinking and reverence) and release (accepting and separating). Coordinated by Claudia Paraschiv of Studioful Design.

Join us!

We are seeking local artists to bring their creativity to these projects. Free online workshops and support sessions led by professional public artists Carolyn Lewenberg and Amanda Hill begin at the end of June. All are invited to attend to advance their artmaking skills, make connections, and get support in developing their designs for these projects. The artists selected to execute their designs will receive a stipend.

Children have been dealing with many changes these last few months. Schools have closed and families have lost income. They may also be confused and frightened by what they see in the news.

The next Conversations with FCSN will feature Mary-Beth Landy, an RTSC trauma specialist. We will explore how trauma affects children and how we can be a resource to them during this turbulent time.

Chalk Art Saturdays Launches This Weekend / Los Sábados de Arte en Tiza (Chalk Art Saturdays) comienzan este fin de semana

Chalk Art Saturdays Launches This Weekend
Kicking off this Saturday, June 13, Chalk Art Saturdays is a community art project from Chelsea Prospers with the help of Studioful Design. For six Saturdays in June and July, Chelsea residents are all invited to make chalk art in public spaces near their homes, with each weekend having a different theme.

A different local artist will also be commissioned each Saturday morning to create a large chalk mural somewhere in the City (you can find out where by checking Chelsea Prospers Instagram or Facebook page). Hundreds of chalk sets will be shared with residents across the city so that everyone can take part. Want one for your neighborhood? Email Mimi Graney at mgraney@chelseama.gov.

This Saturday’s theme is “Imagine Racial Justice” in support of the Black Lives Matter movement. Artist and Chelsea High School student Sinai Galicia is our inaugural artist. You can see Sinai’s previous artwork on Instagram.
