Upcoming Emergency Broadband Benefit Changes

Important Emergency Broadband Benefit Program changes will take effect next year.

Congress recently created the Affordable Connectivity Program, a new long-term, $14 billion program, which will replace the Emergency Broadband Benefit Program.

What’s Changing?

  • The maximum monthly benefit will change from $50 per month to $30 per month for households not located on qualifying Tribal lands. The monthly benefit will remain at $75 per month for households on qualifying Tribal lands.
  • Households have new ways to qualify for the Affordable Connectivity Program such as: receiving WIC benefits or having an income at or below 200% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines.
  • Households that qualified for the Emergency Broadband Benefit due to a substantial loss of income due to job loss or furlough since February 29, 2020 or by meeting the eligibility criteria for a participating provider’s COVID-19 program will need to requalify for the Affordable Connectivity Program.

You can still apply for the EBB! Households enrolled in the Emergency Broadband Benefit Program as of 12/31/21 will continue to receive their current monthly benefit during a 60-day transition period.

More information about actions current Emergency Broadband Benefit recipients will need to take to continue receiving the Affordable Connectivity Program benefit after the transition period will be available in the coming weeks.

The FCC is seeking comment on the changes enacted in the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act and will be adopting rules for the Affordable Connectivity Program. You can view the public notice here: https://docs.fcc.gov/public/attachments/DA-21-1453A1.pdf

City of Chelsea response to COVID-19

The Chelsea Board of Health has implemented an Indoor Mask Mandate for all Indoor Public Spaces. The order goes into effect this Friday, December 3, 2021 at 5:00am. This emergency order is part of a continued effort to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 in the Chelsea community.

Masks and face coverings are one of the most effective ways to mitigate the spread of COVID-19. This order applies to all public spaces within private businesses as well as to public spaces located within public buildings. A mask mandate had already been in place at Chelsea City Hall, the Chelsea Public Library, the Chelsea Senior Center and Chelsea Public Schools.

The indoor mask mandate is another layer of protection for Chelsea residents as public health officials continue to monitor the impacts of COVID-19. Vaccinations continue to be available to Chelsea residents for free at the Chelsea Senior Center. The Pfizer, Moderna, and Johnson & Johnson vaccine, the pediatric COVID-19 vaccine (ages 5-11) and COVID-19 booster shots (ages 18+) are all available. Any resident can receive the vaccine for free, regardless of immigration status.

In the community, La Colaborativa hosts a mobile vaccination clinic every Tuesday at its 318 Broadway location from 4:00-7:00pm. The mobile clinic will be open until Tuesday, Dec. 14. Chelsea Public Schools will have a Pediatric COVID-19 Vaccination Clinic on Saturday, Dec. 11, from 1:00-5:00pm at the Mary C. Burke Elementary Complex.

COVID-19 testing also remains available for free for Chelsea residents at Saint Rose School on 580 Broadway. The indoors testing center is open Monday-Sunday from 1:00-5:00pm.The indoors testing center is open Monday-Sunday from 1:00-5:00pm.
