This Week at Revere Recreation

We have lots of programs underway and are beginning more every week! Please continue to keep an eye on our social media pages for new programs being announced every week!

Important Reminder: All city offices are CLOSED this Thursday (11/11) in observance of Veteran’s Day. All Thursday programs at the Rec Center and the Community Center are cancelled this week.

*Zumba for this week is cancelled. We will now be beginning Zumba on 11/30.

*Our first Kids Night Out of the school year takes place this Friday (11/12) at the Community Center at the Garfield School. All children in grades 1-6 are welcome to attend. The event runs from 6:00PM-8:45PM and cost is $15. Pizza will be served.

*We are offering a Drama/Improv workshop next Friday (11/19) at the Community Center. This is a one night event for ages 12-17 from 6:00PM-8:00PM. Pizza will be served.

*Winter Basketball begins on December 11 for grades 2-8. This league will be held at the Susan B. Anthony Gym. Registration is $100 and this league is open to boys and girls. Schedule is as follows:
Boys:
– 2nd, 3rd and 4th Grade: 11:00AM
– 5th and 6th Grade: 12:00PM
– 7th and 8th Grade: 1:00PM
Girls:
– 2nd, 3rd and 4th Grade: 2:00PM
– 5th and 6th Grade: 3:00PM
– 7th and 8th Grade: 4:00PM

*Our K-2 Basketball Clinic Begins on December 4th. Clinic will be held on Saturdays at the Susan B. Anthony Gym. Registration is $75 per player. Times are as follows:
-Kindergarten: 11:00AM
-1st Grade: 12:00PM
-2nd Grade: 1:00PM

*Flag Football Skills and Drills will take place in the Community Center Gym on Wednesdays from December 1 – December 22. This program is open to all children ages 7-10 and will run from 6:00PM – 7:15PM. Cost is $45 per player.

*Minisports and Games begins the Saturday (11/13) for ages 3-6! This is an exciting new sports program for our younger residents through F.A.S.T. Sports. The first session will run every Saturday from November 13 – December 18 (No class 11/27). Cost is $65 for the session.

Partnering with Harvard Museums of Science & Culture in celebration of Chelsea Reads, join Harvard student Evans Schultes for a reading of the Aztec legend The Princess and the Warrior: A Tale of Two Volcanoes by Duncan Tonatiuh! Evans will read in Spanish and take you along on an activity from the Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology at Harvard University via Zoom!

Muralist David Fichter’s work, Chelsea Resilient: Call and Response Through the Ages, will be unveiled on Saturday, November 13, 2021 at 11 am on Fifth Street between Broadway and Cherry Street.

 

Across 80 feet, Chelsea Resilient traces the rich history of this Massachusetts city from its beginnings as Winnisimmet, when Native American peoples fished and dug mussels on the banks of Chelsea Creek, to the urban, diverse city we know today. Across four centuries this community has repeatedly risen to overcome challenges and tragedies, responding with energy, heartfelt mutual concern, and an unquenchable drive to rebuild. The struggles and successes of each generation of Chelsea residents echo across history with a message of courage, determination, and optimism. Our past, present and future are linked in a continuous call to action and grassroots response, the defining character of Chelsea and its people.

 

The mural is the culmination of 18 months of work by the artist. A Steering Committee guided the overall design while dozens of members of the Chelsea community contributed to the research, provided reference images, and contributed their likeness to the telling of Chelsea’s story.

 

Celebration includes performances by the Chelsea International Band and Carmen Villalta’s Salvadoran Folklore Dance Group “Torogoz.

 

Funding was provided by the Chelsea Cultural Council through their Heritage Celebrations Grant program and supplemented by municipal funds allocated by the Chelsea City Council for art in the downtown.

 

Roadway Murals

Division Street and Chelsea Square a River of Color

11 am starting on the Broadway side of City Hall

Division Street was once one of the city’s most unpleasant alleyways. Since 2019, progressive efforts are transforming the area into a Neighborway – that is, an attractive, shared street where people walking, on bikes and in vehicles can all safely pass.

 

Celebrate with us the completion of four blocks of roadway murals on Division Street stretching from Hawthorne to Pearl Street along with another big roadway design on Winnsimmet in Chelsea Square.

 

Following a concept by artist Liz LaManche working with Neighborways Design, individual artists painted designs scattered along the roadway. A Community Painting Day last summer brought in dozens of helpers to fill in hexagon shapes. Rugged thermoplastic was professionally installed where standing up to traffic wear is most needed.

 

During our “dog parade” this Saturday we’ll walk from City Hall through Division Street to show off the results.

Pearl Street Mural

Silvia López Chavez at work

GreenRoots and its team of ECO (Environmental Chelsea Organizers) youth partnered with Chelsea artist Silvia López Chavez for a new mural on the side of ROCA’s offices downtown. The design is a blooming garden made up of 33 national flowers representative of the diversity of Chelsea’s residents. The design can be found at Pearl Street side of the building at the corner of Essex Street.

Funding was provided by the Chelsea Cultural Council through their Heritage Celebrations Grant program.

As of November 1st, 2021, the Chelsea Housing Authority will be reopening our Federal Family waiting list lottery. This list only opens once every few years and has a one month window in which to apply. Anyone interested in applying must to do so from November 1st, 2021, to November 30th, 2021.

 

Additionally, we have made easier and more convenient for everyone to apply with our latest online application option. We encourage anyone interested in applying to do so online through our website, “www.chelseaha.com” under the applicants tab and the “apply online” subtab. Doing this has the following benefits: 1) Guaranteed receipt of your completed application, 2) Immediate receipt of your application upon completion, and 3) Security with you and your family’s confidential information.

Chelsea High School Upcoming Concerts / La Escuela Superior de Chelsea Próximos Conciertos

This week, Chelsea High School will have a pair of musical performances. First, tomorrow morning CHS will host a Dance & Percussive Recital at 8:30am. Then on Thursday morning, three CHS groups will perform for veterans at the Soldiers’ Home in Chelsea.
This special concert series will feature performances by the CHS Concert Band, CHS Cantare and the debut performance of the CHS Orchestra!

New Chelsea Commuter Rail Station Opening for Service on November 15

Old Station Will Close at End of Service on November 14

The MBTA is pleased to announce that the new, fully accessible Chelsea Commuter Rail station next to the final SL3 stop on Everett Avenue in Chelsea will open for service on Monday, November 15. The new, multimodal station will connect the Newburyport/Rockport Commuter Rail Lines to the SL3. The new station features full high-level platforms for boarding, canopies and benches, new sidewalks, security cameras, passenger assistance telephones, lighting, and more.

The current station on Arlington Street will continue operating until it is permanently closed on Sunday, November 14, after the last train departs at 11:11 PM.

Please plan your trip accordingly. In the event that you accidentally arrive at the old station on or after November 15, you may walk or take the SL3 to the new station. Walking directions and a map are included below. Signs and MBTA Transit Ambassadors will help guide customers as they walk along this route.

  1. Cross Arlington Street and travel north on 6th St
  2. Turn left on Spruce Street and cross the train tracks
  3. Continue past MGH Chelsea and turn right on Everett Ave
  4. The new station will be on your left after Santander bank, before the train tracks

Riders may also take the Silver Line 3 (SL3) between the old and new stations by riding an outbound bus from Bellingham Square to Chelsea Station.

Be safe! Please do not walk along the Commuter Rail tracks or Silver Line busway. Cross tracks and busways only at marked pedestrian walkways and look both ways before crossing.

Please know that MassDOT, the MBTA, their consultants, and the contractor continue to work on the Chelsea Commuter Rail Project through these challenging times and have implemented appropriate safety measures related to COVID-19.

Nueva estación del Commuter Rail en Chelsea abrirá al público el 15 de noviembre

El MBTA se complace en anunciar la apertura de la nueva estación del Commuter Rail, ubicada junto a la última parada del bus SL3 en Everett Avenue en Chelsea. Esta nueva estación multimodal conectará las líneas de Newburyport/Rockport del Commuter Rail con la línea de bus SL3. La nueva estación es totalmente accesible con plataformas elevadas que permitirán abordar a nivel los trenes del Commuter Rail, cuenta además con marquesinas con bancas, aceras nuevas, cámaras de seguridad, teléfonos de asistencia para pasajeros, iluminación, etc.

La estación actual ubicada en Arlington Street seguirá operando hasta su cierre permanente que ocurrirá el domingo 14 de noviembre después del paso del último tren a las 11:11 PM.

Por favor planifique sus viajes de acuerdo a los cambios. En caso de que por equivocación llegue a la antigua estación el 15 de noviembre o después de esa fecha, se puede caminar o tomar el bus SL3 para llegar a la nueva estación. Abajo se incluyen instrucciones y mapa para llegar a pie. El MBTA podrá a disposición letreros y Embajadores del transporte a lo largo de la ruta para ayudar a guiar a sus consumidores.
