In Honor of Dia de los Muertos

Celebrate the lives of loved ones through a community ofrenda and mini-festival. Elotes from Veronica Robles Center, mariachis, face painting and more will be part of the gathering on the small park in Chelsea Square opposite 189 Winnisimmet Street.

KITE MAKING
Some people believe that messages sent into the sky are a means of spiritual communication, with the reach towards the heavens a way to connect with those who have passed away. Inspired by the Sumpango Kite Festival held in Guatemala, we invite you to create a kite for display at our Dia de los Muertos gathering. Kits with all the supplies you need are available for pick up at Chelsea City Hall. Contact Mimi Graney to reserve your supplies.
SUPPORT THE CHELSEA FUNERAL FUND
The Chelsea Funeral Fund provides dignified care for residents of Chelsea who die without the means to pay for a funeral. Since the fund was established as part of Chelsea community’s response to the Covid-19 pandemic, 13 individuals have been assisted. Today, the lack of resources, rather than the cause of death, qualifies one to access this fund. Fr Edgar Gutierrez-Duarte of St Luke’s Episcopal Church administers the fund and it is open to all, regardless of faith.
For each donation of $5 to the Chelsea Funeral Fund during the month of October, volunteers will craft a colorful flower that will be included in the community ofrenda. Follow this link to make your contribution.

This event is presented by a team including Jukebox Event, All Planets Design, the Chelsea Funeral Fund Committee, and the City of Chelsea. The Chelsea Cultural Council provided financial assistance for the festival.

DISTRICT UPDATES
Chelsea Public Schools recognized the anniversary of September 11th today.  Dr. Abeyta shared this message with staff:

Over the last 20 years, the anniversary of the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 annually offers us an opportunity to reflect and participate in patriotic ceremonies in memory of those we lost. It also creates a moment for us to come together in unison to honor the servicemen and women as well as the first responders who protected our freedom 20 years ago, and continue to do so today. Whether it’s through moments of silence, peaceful reflections, or other patriotic methods, I encourage all of us to remember those we lost 20 years ago, our Massachusetts Military Heroes, the 13 service members killed recently in Afghanistan and all those who presently serve in the armed forces. Moments like today bring us together as a community and strengthen our bonds as we collectively appreciate the sacrifices made by our military members and first responders. Thank you for uniting our school community in acts of remembrance and hope.

About 60 students participated in tutoring, mentoring, literacy through hip-hop writing workshops, project adventure, entrepreneurship, book club and more. The program culminated at the REACH “From COVID to Entrepreneurs” event held on August 4th, 2021, where students presented seven fully executed businesses.

CPS is proud to welcome our first cohort of parents in our Parent to Para Program in the classroom this week! Cohort 1 currently has 6 parents working as paraprofessionals within the district. Below is a picture of parents attending their program orientation in August.

At the Kelly School we are so happy to be ALL together again!
Staff and students have been getting to know each other by name, strength, and story — including with a word search to find the names of all the 3rd graders in Ms. Johnson’s class!

Sra. Berganza introduced herself “por los números / by the numbers” to help her students learn some of her story… and here Ms. Perez helps a 2nd grader do her own “by the numbers”

Kids have also dived into reading, exploring our wonderful new class libraries for high-interest topics (like a book on platypuses!).

Ms. Culkin’s 3rd graders are thinking about how — just like a pair of shoes! — we choose a book for a particular purpose, interest, and “fit.”
